Convention of a narrative music video

The music video i analysed is called "we found love" which is made by Rihanna this music video used a lot of different shots which were used to tell the story in the video which is about partying, love, having fun and doing bad things. the music video tells it story through editing because each shot or scene in the video is no more than 2 seconds long which shows that the video cut up.

This music video has used a lot of locations to tell the story, the music video consists of at least ten locations. these are some of the many locations used in the video.

This is a print screen of the shop location.

This is the print screen of the fish and chip shop location.

This is the print screen of the flat location.

There are a lot of different camera shots used in the music video such as close ups, over the shoulder shot,  medium close up long shot, extreme close up and many more. they have used these camera shots to add to the quick editing used in the video to tell the story line. they are used to help emphasise the storyline in the video.

 Close up

                     Over the shoulder shot

                 Extreme close up

They also use a green screen in this music video to project an image of a burning house. this is because it shows that the relationship between Rihanna and the boy in the video is burning, crumbling and breaking up. also they used the green screen because of health and safety reasons and also because of the budget they probably could not afford to go buy a house and burn it. Also they use the green screen to add special effects such as lightning and clouds

How to use green screen?

  1. Create a green screen background by painting a wall green or covering it with a green cloth or covering it with a big piece of green paper.

         2.  If you are using fabric, mount it to the wall using glue strips or liquid nails.

           3.  Light the green screen separately from the subject to eliminate hot spots.

             4.  Make sure the subject does not wear anything with the colour green unless the subject wants to be        invisible.

               5.  Place the talent far enough away from the green background to create separation between the two.

                   6.  Light the subject to eliminate shadows.

                     7.  Shoot your footage and then load into your editing system for the background change.

Codes and conventions of music videos

Dancing is a code and convention of music videos because it happens over and over again it is a recurring code and convention it appears in almost every music video. examples of music videos which have dancing in them are jason Derulos "it girl", ushers "OMG" , Ne-Yo "beautiful monster". almost every music artist has dancing in there videos.

                http://cbswpeg.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/usher-dancing.jpg?w=385&h=240

narrative is a code and convention of music videos because most music videos tell a story about what is going on? and what is happening?. this is also a recurring code and convention because it is seen over and over again in pretty much every music video. an example of a narrative music video is ushers "confessions part 2", adele's "someone like you", beyonces "if i were a boy."

Performing is a code and convention of music videos because a lot of videos have an artist performing and dancing to his\her song. performance video is a code and convention because it is seen in most music videos. An example of a performance video is pit bull's song "give me everything tonight". Ushers DJ'S got us falling in love again, jason derulos "don.t wanna go home".

Image is a code and convention of music video because the way a certain artists dresses represents the genre of there music video or the location or setting that also represents the genre of there music video. for example an artist is making an r&b and grime type song the setting would be likely to be a ally way and the clothes that what be worn would be a tracksuit, trainers and a hat which would fit in well with the image of the song.

Camera shots are code and convention in music videos because they are used over and over again in every music video. This is to make the music video interesting to watch and all these shots emphasise the artist, location and setting.

anthony's clothing that is going to be worn in our music video

The reason why we chose these clothes to be in our video is that they represent the hip hop image and it goes with our target audience which is teenagers. also these particular clothes go well with our song because it is an r&b, hip hop and grime type of song so the clothes fit in well with the music.

                Pictures Of Locations

We chose the music studio to film a part of our music video because it fits in well with the music video and because music studios in music videos are used quite often. We chose the allyway in to town as one of our locations because it goes well with the song and it goes well with the r&b and hip hop type image. also it has graffiti on the wall which makes it suit our image. most of our video will be recorded in this ally way. Also we will be recording a part of our music video on a green screen which will project an image of new york city. we used the hallway seating area to film a part of our video because it seemed perfect to film our little shot there. we used the media classroom to film a part of our video because there is a lot of space to film there.

You know we ain't cool with one another
You don't deserve to decide when I'm gonna be a papa (Never)
However much I hate you think I'm gonna sit around

I ain't gonna lie I'm always behind when you get on all 4's
But when your belly popped out you said it was my fault,
You told me I shoulda put something on

                Verse 2
You weren't sayin' shit wen I was lickin on your pelvis
Now your tryna act up saying that I'm selfish
I ain't ready for no pikni I can't help it
And it's too late to say I should of worn a helmet
I would love to be the perfect dad
I would love to give my kids everything I never had (straight)
All I'm tryna say is now ain't the time
So if you don't wanna listen it's best I just leave

                Chorus

It's only you you you and noone else,
So take responsibility, you should of put something on,
So who do you think you are I ain't getting rid of shit,
Don't get this, don't blame me, you shoulda put something

Verse 3 Something let me tell you bout something,
Recognise you can't tell me nothing but one thing boy you got my blood pumping,
I'm ragin at you, you got me so damn angry,
Your selfish and ruthless so useless excuses mean nothing to me,
This child is a part of me,
You can't begin to understand so while it's living and growing inside,
But you're just a man, you don't understand,

I have to be real with you
I think we both know that the both of us ain't got much doe
                I'm afraid I can't be involved,

It's just the same old selfishness with you
                Don't pretend your understanding
It's a little too late to act confused
Cause I know what I'm gonna do do do do do
Who do you think you are?

                Chorus

Anylising the music video made by btec students last year

I think that this music video is a performance and narrative video  because it tells a story about a man  who is struggling in life. This video follows the hip hop music video conventions very well because it is filmed on the street in rough looking areas. the location and setting fits in well with the hip hop image. the clothes they used the, hoodie, jeans, trainers also fitted well in to the hip hop image.

they used a range of camera angles which helped make the music fit in to the hip hop image. it also made the video interesting to watch by using different camera angles.the costumes used are in the video are good because they go well and symbolise the hip hop image. the lighting and colour used in this video is very dull because it is a sad song about a man struggling in life needing an oppurtunity and needing a chance.

                Risk assessment for our project

Our video will be made in areas around the school and because of this we need to be extra careful in what we do because we might be filming outside of school in a public area we need to be careful because there are alot of people around. To avoid any accidents we need to walk around slowly and responsibly so we do not come in the way of people and cause problems.

Our video might also be recorded outside of school in an ally way near pool meadow we are filming it there because it fits in well with the theme of our music video. we need to be careful while we are filming there because there are a lot of people walking through this ally way to get in to town. To avoid any serious accidents we will be filming in this location in the morning because it will not be busy at that particular time and we will not come in the way of people.

Our video might also be recorded in the music studio inside of school. we are filming there because it is used in a lot of music videos. we need to be extra careful in this area because there is alot of equipment in this area so to avoid any serious accidents we will have to be extra carefull so we do not knock any equipmentb over.

My mood board for our project

Planning and Preparation For Our Project

The music video that we have chosen to do our project on is called "Should Of Put Something on". This is a song made by the group N-Dubz, this song has not got an official video. anthony is going to perform the song and i am going to record him on camera. we think that it is a narrative song. anthony is going to walk around school while i film him. the video will be set on school grounds in different areas of the school. we might film a little part of our video outside of school as well. anthony is going to be the protagonist (hero) of our video. we need a girl also to mime girls singing.

in this music video there are two different story lines happening one of the story lines is told by Dappy and the other story line is told by Tulisa. in the first of the music video it describes two people not getting along with one another which is sang by Dappy. the song shows that there is a small child somehow involved in the song because in the song it says "do you think that im gunna sit around and watch him suffer". this shows that the child is suffering because if stuff that does not involve him. when Tulisa starts singing she talks about someone being blamed for no reason.

                Types of music videos

                Narrative music videos

A narrative music video tells a story through moving images in the video.  A narrative music video tell a short story about the artist's past it can also narrate the story of a song. the story is shown through the video followed by the song. an example of a narrative music video is michael jackson's childhood which tells the story about how hard life was for him as a child.

                Performance video

A performance video is about an artist performing and dancing to his\her song. A performance video normally is made with a fast paced pace song and it consists a lot of different camera angles to make it eye catching. An example of a music video is pit bull's song give me everything tonight. this is performance song because artist is dancing which makes it a performance video.

                Concept video

A concept video is an idea, this type of music video can consist with animations and it can have effects. this type of video can also have moving objects. An example of a concept music video is Christina Aguilera's dynamite this a concept video because it displays animations and moving objects it is an idea which is a concept music video. a concept music video is random.

Fat boy slim weapon of choice

Fat boy's slim song weapon of choice is set in a hotel. i think the storyline is about a grown business man releasing his inner child. i think all this dancing is happening in his head. it is like he wants to jump up and down but he cant. i think this video is a narrative music video because i think it tells a a story of a business man imagining himself dancing which he wants to realy but can.t. i also think that this music video is dance music video. this music video is a protagonist video the camera is always fat boy slim.

Fat boy slim's movements and expressions and movements are childlike it is like he has missed out on his childhood and something inside him wants him to make up for it.  the music video contains alot of different camera shots which makes the video more interesting to watch. i thik by using the range of different camera shots grabs the viewers attention.

i  think that portrayed a message in this video which is you should not miss out on your childhood because you will live to regret it.

Florence + the machine - rabbit heart (raise it up)

                                                     mise en scene

                • Location setting and props
                • costume hair and make up
                • facial expressions and body language
                • lighting and colour
                • positioning of characters/objects in the frame
florence's song the machine is set in a forest to show that she is going to be released in to nature. i think the setting was used to represent happiness because in the video she is roaming around the forest with her friends. i think this place was used because it represents heaven it is shown as a dream like place and she is very happy to be there. i think that this particular setting symbolises her image of heaven. I think the location of this song has been shown in a bright sunny place which i think symbolises happiness.  the food prop used in the video symbolises the last supper that jesus had, it is like she is having and enjoying her last meal before she gets set free in to nature.

The costumes used in to this video are angel like by using the colour white they symbolise purity and happiness. also the costumes used in this video are like the costumes u would where in heaven, they have a heavenly feel about them. the hair and make up florence used in this video is different to the background dancers in this video because it makes her stand it makes her seem as the chosen and only she will enter heaven.

The body language in this video comes across as very positive it makes it seem like a happy funeral more than a sad one. the facial expressions symbolise happiness and enjoyment and although she will die shortly they seem to be smiling through out even after she dies.

The lighting and colour used in this video is very bright, it makes this extremely sad moment seem very positive it makes it seem as if she is not dying.

                Monday, 12 September 2011

Michael Jackson's song thriller is regarded as the best music video of all time. this particular video changed the way the world sees music, it made the world see music through dancing. The song was made as a short horror movie. it became a global phenomenon through out the world and it made people learn the dance steps in the video. the camera is always focused on the lead singer (Michael Jackson) which makes this a protagonist music video . the reason why this particular video became a hit is because it tells a story, by telling a story it changed the way world sees music. for the first time the world sees a story in a music video.
